IU President Michael A. McRobbie conferred an honorary doctorate to legendary dancer and choreographer Bill T. Jones during a ceremony at the Ruth N. Halls Theatre Feb. 21.
McRobbie said Jones continues to push the boundaries of modern dance.
"In a professional career rapidly approaching five decades, he has choreographed for many of the world's most celebrated performing ensembles and earned nearly every major dance honor and award," McRobbie said. "Indiana University is extremely pleased to recognize his lifetime achievement in the arts and the inspiration he has brought to so many with an IU doctoral degree, the highest academic honor the university can bestow."
Jones was in Bloomington for the world premiere of his new work, "What Problem?" IU Auditorium co-commissioned the work as part of the IU Bicentennial celebration and to celebrate Black History Month.
