When a 16-member delegation from Sorbonne University recently visited the Indiana University Bloomington campus, the two leading research institutions signed two agreements that will support faculty collaboration and student exchanges. Members of the delegation also had the opportunity to engage with their IU counterparts to explore areas of mutual interest.
At a reception held at IU's Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies to formally sign the agreements, IU President Michael A. McRobbie welcomed the delegation led by Sorbonne President Jean Chambaz.
"On behalf of Indiana University, I want to extend a warm welcome to the delegation from Sorbonne University in Paris, one of France’s newest universities, but formed through the merger of two venerated research institutions," McRobbie said.

Senior leaders from IU have been exploring opportunities to collaborate with Sorbonne University since McRobbie led a delegation to Franch in 2017. While in Paris, members of the delegation engaged with leaders of Université Pierre et Marie Curie, France's top science and medical education university; and Paris Sorbonne Université, the country's largest institution dedicated to the study of literature, languages, civilizations, arts and humanities, and the social sciences. The two leading institutions have since merged to form Sorbonne Université.
IU's development of international partnerships with leading higher education institutions like Sorbonne University supports IU's strategic priority as a global university.
"Strong and active academic partnerships are essential to facilitating international engagement and collaboration, and IU is proud of its longstanding and productive relationships with some of the leading international universities in the world," McRobbie said. "We are proud to count Sorbonne University as a new and valued partner."
