IU President Michael A. McRobbie (left) listens as Enrique Graue Wiechers, president of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, talks about his university. IU's relationship with National Autonomous University of Mexico dates back to 1999, when collaboration began between the university and the Ostrom Workshop in Political Theory and Policy Analysis at IU. The workshop was co-founded in 1973 by the late Nobel Prize-winning economist and IU Distinguished Professor Elinor Ostrom.

IU has identified Mexico as one of 30 "priority" countries the university is seeking to enhance relations with as it carries out the mission of its international strategic plan.
