The event served as an opportunity for university and community members to hear brief presentations from each of the five teams invited to submit full proposal for funding through the Indiana University Grand Challenges Program—the most ambitious research program in the university's history. The program, launched in September, will invest up to $300 million over five years to address some of the most urgent challenges facing Indiana and the world.

William Hetrick, professor and chair of Psychological and Brain Sciences in the IU Bloomington College of Arts and Sciences, talks about his joint proposal “Health Equity in Indiana and Beyond.” Hetrick’s proposal is a joint effort with several individuals on the IUPUI and IU Bloomington campuses. Other team members include Gabriel Filippelli, professor of earth sciences at IUPUI and director of the IU Center for Urban Health; David Burr, distinguished professor and associate vice chancellor for research at IUPUI; Michael Reece, professor and associate dean at the IU School of Public Health-Bloomington; Sarah Wiehe, a pediatrician and public health researcher for Children’s Health Services Research at the IU School of Medicine; and Lisa Staten, associate professor and the director of the Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health’s Social and Behavioral Sciences Department at IUPUI.
