The Rededication of Franklin Hall
The Rededication of Franklin Hall
Former broadcaster Ken Beckley and his wife, Audrey, both IU alumni, stand in the new television studio in Franklin Hall. The couple made a gift to The Media School to make the studio possible. The Ken and Audrey Beckley Studio serves as a facility for TV broadcast news classes and production workshops, as well as for IUSTV, the campus’s student-run television station, for student coverage of basketball and football half-time shows and for a variety of other activities.

The audience applauds during the rededication ceremony of Franklin Hall. The convocation was the culmination of the Media School’s move into the building, which reopened in August after a two-year, $21 million renovation. The Media School, formed within the College of Arts and Sciences in 2014, comprises journalism, telecommunications and film studies programs at IU.
IU President Michael A. McRobbie welcomes the audience to the rededication ceremony of Franklin Hall. Originally completed in 1907, Franklin Hall first served as the campus library and later as the Student Services Building. It was renamed in 1989 after alumnus and former university treasurer and vice president Joseph A. Franklin.

IU Bloomington Provost and IU Executive Vice President Lauren Robel delivers her remarks during the rededication ceremony.
Founding Dean of The Media School James Shanahan addresses the audience during the ceremony. The Media School serves as the university’s pre-eminent site for teaching, research and service about the understanding and production of media.
Olivia R. DeWeese, a senior in The Media School, talks about how the newly renovated building and its state-of-the-art technology will help students to learn and prepare for careers after graduation.
Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees MaryEllen Kiley Bishop presents the key to Franklin Hall to IU President Michael A. McRobbie.
Franklin Hall, built in 1907 to house the IU library and situated at the gateway to campus, has undergone $21 million in renovations. The heart of the building features a commons, open to skylights three stories up. A key feature of the common area is the interactive 24-foot-by-12-foot screen.
