Richard A. Reed addresses the audiences after receiving the Distinguished Alumni Service Award. Read earned a bachelor of social work in 1995 and a master of social work in 1996 from the IU School of Social Work. Reed is hailed as one of the U.S. government’s foremost experts and leaders in the field of disaster response for more than 20 years. Reed spent 20 years working for the federal government in a number of high-ranking positions, including six years at the White House under two presidents.

Each year, the IU Alumni Association hosts the award ceremony and dinner to honor outstanding alumni with the highest accolade reserved solely for alumni. The Hon. Lorna G. Schofield delivers her remarks after receiving the Distinguished Alumni Service Award. As the first federal judge of Filipino-American descent, Schofield is hailed as a trailblazing figure in the field of law and for women of Asian descent. She was nominated to the bench in 2012 by President Barack Obama and unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate, serving in one of the busiest courts in America, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, seated in lower Manhattan.

Gray, who earned a bachelor of science from the IU School of Public Health–Bloomington in 1969, was recognized for the work he has done toward finding families for adoptable black children.

IU President Michael A. McRobbie presents the Distinguished Alumni Service Award to Chris Botti, who studied in the early 1980s with IU's legendary jazz instructor, the late David Baker. Botti has since become the largest-selling American jazz instrumentalist, garnering numerous awards. His album "Impressions" won the 2013 Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental Album.
