Plaque Unveiling in Honor of Dr. Steven C. Beering

IU President Michael A. McRobbie welcomes the audience to the plaque unveiling ceremony in honor of Dr. Steven Beering and describes the doctor's life. Born in Berlin, Germany, Dr. Beering's family moved to Pennsylvania after World War II. He earned his medical degree in 1958 and joined the U.S. Medical Corps after graduation. In 1969, he left the Corps upon his appointment to the faculty of the IU School of Medicine.

IU President Michael A. McRobbie applauds, along with the audience, after describing the accomplishments of Dr. Steven Beering. One of his great contributions to the IU School of Medicine was his leadership in the establishment of the Indiana Statewide Medical Education System. He was named dean of the school in 1974, the youngest dean in the school’s history, and served in that role until 1983, when he was selected as Purdue University’s ninth president.

In 1983, the IU School of Medicine founded the Steven C. Beering Award to honor an internationally recognized individual for outstanding research contributions to the advancement of biomedical or clinical science.

When Dr. Beering helped establish the Indiana Statewide Medical Education System in the late 1960s, the state was facing a shortage of physicians that could have placed the state's growing population in crisis.
